Some of Boston’s favorite chefs and restaurants will be supporting this great cause, including: West Bridge, Tavern Road, Boston Chops, BonMe, Pauli’s, Coppa, Moksa, No. 9 Park, ICOB, Sportello, Piperi, Anna’s Taqueria, and Sweet

Tickets are available at $125 for an individual, or $500 for a Camp Patron (2 tickets plus a campership for one child to attend camp). Purchase your tickets, or simply make a donation here.

With 31 of 33 units full, only two upper units remain unsold in the co-housing community known as Groundswell.

Yarrow Ecovillage babies Zen and Raquel spent some time together recently at a parents' group get-together. The co-housing community has 31 of its 33 units filled and is looking for last two households to be filled.

They are almost full at the Yarrow Ecovillage in Chilliwack.

With 31 of 33 units spoken for, only two upper duplex units remain unsold in the co-housing community known as Groundswell.

“The real innovation is the people,” said Ecovillage resident Linda Jones. “Everyone is so driven here to live the better life.”

Yarrow Ecovillage is on a 22-acre site on Yarrow Central Road. There are 20 acres of certified organic farm land being cultivated, in addition to the 33 units of multi-generational co-housing built on a smaller parcel.

Jones said she enjoys taking part in Parents’ Group activities with her four-month old daughter Raquel and her neighbours.

They get together monthly to share food, ideas, recipes, and diapers. The best part is Jones said she can walk to her neighbours’ homes, to school and to nearby shops. The most “eco” thing about ecovillage life is being able to walk everywhere, she added.

The homes are strata-type residences and the community has been flourishing in recent years on the western edge of Chilliwack.

Yarrow Ecovillage was actually the first in Canada to see the term “ecovillage” incorporated into a rezoning. Chilliwack council approved the plan to redesignate the zoning at the site from rural residential to the newly established ‘ecovillage zone’ in 2006.

Using the term ‘ecovillage’ underlined the residents’ desire to live sustainably and cooperatively in an intentional community.

The group built a biological waste water treatment system that allows for treatment and reclamation of all their waste water on-site.

They have their own private residences but share amenities like a new common house. The common house is perfect for holding community dinners, housing guests, doing laundry, and much more.

“I fell in love with Yarrow while house-sitting years ago,” Jones said. “But I couldn’t afford to live here because of the land prices. Living at the Ecovillage was the answer.”

The community dinners make life infinitely easier for the mom of three kids.

“We have a community meal set up four nights a week,” said Jones. “It means I don’t have to think about meals, plan them, or clean up after.”

Of course everything is optional.

You can share a meal in the common house — or not. You can socialize — or not.

“I like that you can be as private or as social as you like to be,” she said. “I treasure that.”

For stay-at-home dad Steve Woolf what is inherently different about ecovillage life is the strong emphasis on collaboration and teamwork within the community.

“There’s a security and freedom provided here that you can’t really buy.”

As a family with three kids, they opted to move here from California in part because of how family-friendly life it is at the ecovillage.

“People collaborate in a way I haven’t seen happen outside this community,” Woolf said. “You see it in the business world but the scope here is bigger.

“So instead of it being me and my family against the world, you get a whole group looking out for you.”

For Jones, it’s much appreciated to have so many varied skill sets covered, including growing food.

“As a gardener I love having gardeners living here to share wisdom.”

Woolf agreed there’s lots of knowledge at the Ecovillage to draw on.

“Every topic is covered from babies teething, to planting leeks or building sheds. There’s a collective wisdom you can tap into. If you want to do something, there it is.”

In some ways they are out to recapture everything good about village life as a group.

“This a reflection of how people used to live,” said Kirsten Pudas.

“You know your neighbours and you can rely on each other.

“We’re setting that up again, which is something I think we’ve lost as a society.”

Michigan picked up a big old grad transfer commitment today to boost their depth on the interior defensive line, as Oregon State nose guard Jordan Whittley announced he’ll be finishing his long college career in Ann Arbor. He was last listed at 6-1/358 on the Beavers’ roster, which is many. He’s also 25 years old, has already been through three universities, a major position change, an ACL tear, and survived a heart tumor.

— Jordan Whittley (@Thatjacka__) May 21, 2021

It’s big for the program too. Michigan’s thoroughly Don Brown-ified roster was hardly sized for the huge fronts new defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald ran in Baltimore, where 6-1/336 Brandon Williams played alongside 6-0/340 Michael Pierce, 6-4/340 Haloti Ngata, and the like. Whittley will most likely share snaps with Mazi Smith at nose guard, in a late-career Bryan Mone role.

That fits, because Whittley is the same age, and from the same high school class, as Mone, IE Whittley was once a 6-2/225 running back commit to San Jose State in 2014. He didn’t qualify academically, instead ending up at Laney College in Oakland in 2015. Whittley told Sam Webb (shared on the latest Michigan Recruiting Insider podcast) that he had an ACL injury early in his Laney career, and juco medical care being what it is, he was sidelined a long time and put on 100 pounds. When Whittley came back he moved to defensive line, finally playing in 2017 and 2018 for Laney, the latter as an All-American. That earned him a transfer to Oregon State, where Whittley made it into the regular rotation at nose tackle and was awarded a clock extension for his lost 2015 and 2016 at Laney. Last summer he discovered a tumor in his heart and spent the year on the sidelines getting through that. The NCAA also awarded everyone a free year of eligibility so Whittley gets one more go.

These are his 2019 JUCO rankings, meaning the positional rankings are among junior college transfers:

At this time when 1000’s of individuals throughout this nation and different international locations have come collectively in protest each day because the killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis on May 25, it’s price remembering that the battle for Civil Rights has been happening for a very long time.

Here are some quick movies price watching from the Civil Rights actions from the Nineteen Fifties and ’60s:

A marketing campaign to register African American voters was launched throughout the Civil Rights Movement on the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham by Martin Luther King, Ralph David Abernathy and Fred Shutterworth. One of the ugliest, most hateful crimes dedicated throughout that period was the bombing of the sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama on Sept. 15, 1963. That bombing resulted within the homicide of 4 youngsters and accidents to many different folks.

The 4 ladies who had been murdered had been preparing for a church college lesson that morning known as, “The Love That Forgives.” According to the notes with this music, the bombing was “a watershed second for the Civil Rights motion on the time. The video has a nonetheless of the Ku Klux Klan member who allegedly planted the bomb. In October 1963, he was charged with possessing a field of 122 sticks of dynamite with out a allow, for which he obtained 100-greenback advantageous and a six-month jail sentence. It took till 1977 for Robert Chambliss to be indicted for first-diploma homicide. He was discovered responsible and sentenced to life in jail the place he died eight years later.

This music was recorded solo for the Singer Songwriter Project album. It demonstrates Fariña’s rising expertise and hints on the greatness he might need achieved however for his premature loss of life in 1966.”

One of a very powerful occasions occurred in Alabama in 1965. There had been three protest marches from Selma to Montgomery that 12 months. These marches had been to reveal the want of Blacks to train their proper to vote in defiance of segregationist repression. The marchers had been to journey 54 miles as a part of a wider voters’ proper motion. Alabama State Troopers brutally attacked the unarmed, peaceable Civil Rights demonstrators on a bridge outdoors Selma on Bloody Sunday, March 7, 1965. TV protection placed on show the horrible beating the marchers obtained from the police. The marchers went from Selma to Montgomery on March 21-25, led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King.

Later that 12 months, the Voting Rights Act handed Congress and was signed into legislation by President Lyndon Johnson. In 2013, the Supreme Court weakened the legislation, opening the door for the return of voter suppression in a rising variety of states immediately.

CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE Nineteen Sixties

She is taken into account to be “The First Lady of Civil Rights” and “The Mother of the Freedom Movement.”

Joan Baez was one of many singers to carry out on the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in Washington D.C. on Aug. 28, 1963. She sang “We Shall Overcome.” The most remembered a part of that protest gathering – one of many largest in US historical past – was Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have a Dream” speech.

Agassiz Village Fundraiser Coming to Boston May 1st - Recipes

Some restaurants are just home runs. Each dish is an exploration of flavors and techniques, the service is friendly and accommodating, the drinks are well prepared, and the ambiance is welcoming. These are the restaurants that one returns to over and over again knowing that a wonderful evening is almost guaranteed. There are not many restaurants that I would state have this reputation, however, Island Creek Oyster Bar, opened just about six months ago, located in Hotel Commonwealth in Kenmore Square, is one of these.

I have dined at Island Creek Oyster Bar a couple of times now, and have enjoyed beverages at their bar several times as well, each time I have been greeted and welcomed, made to feel at home, and generally have had a fabulous time. I dined there again on Saturday evening, and had a fantastic time once again.

The thing about Island Creek is that its incredibly popular, so the first reservation that we could get, seated us at 6:00 pm. Now, I'm not in love with super early reservations, but happily took this one. We were seated immediately, and left to peruse the menus, drink and dining. I love the menu at Island Creek. Nothing more than a folded piece of paper, its unassuming nature masks the treasures it describes. I recently perched at the bar with a friend in "the business" visiting from out of town, and he remarked on just how incredible this menu is. Not only is it well put together, and lists amazing entrees, the extreme care taken with the raw bar offerings is clear. Island Creek Oyster Bar, possibly as expected, pays great attention to their raw bar, and notates this on their menu by including not only where the oysters were harvested, but the name of the person who completed the task. As someone who reads menus to an almost obsessive degree, this is something I have never seen before. However, it comes as no surprise. Jeremy Sewall, part owner and executive chef who also has Lineage ins Brookline and Eastern Standard to his credit, is known for his care with seafood. His cousin is a lobster man off of Gloucester, so you know that when you order lobster from Sewall, you're only getting the freshest possible. Obviously, he applies this principle to his entire menu.

We had some difficulty deciding what items to order, but with my dining companion not being a big oyster fan, we elected to choose the sweet Maine Shrimp Crudo as our appetizer and then to split two entrees- the lobster roll and their cod, served with potatoes, artichokes and a spinach "fondue". If there was a hiccup to point out, it was that despite clarifying the order to serve our dinner in, the lobster roll arrived ahead of the shrimp. However, this was not a major issue, and the incredible deliciousness of the roll more than made up for it. Delicate chunks of fresh lobster meat, lightly dressed in mayo and herbs, jam packed into a buttery rosemary roll. Served with potato chips and cole slaw- it was the perfect dish to emulate summer. The roll, stuffed to the brim, was difficult to eat without using a fork, which recalled perfect memories of messy eating during those hot summer months by the ocean. The chips and coleslaw were a nice complement, however the real star here was the lobster.

The shrimp crudo came to the table next. Crudo, in case you aren't 100% of the definition of the preparation, refers to a similar form of serving seafood to ceviche. In this form, seafood is mixed with olive oil, an acid, and sea salt. The idea is that light fish can be "cooked" by acid, like a citrus juice, and this procedure almost cures it.The shrimp at Island Creek were mixed with olive oil, lemon juice, sea salt and tarragon. The flavors were really fantastic. Each shrimp exhibited soft lemon flavor, a beautiful bright feel, and wonderfully savory tarragon. Preparing shrimp in the crudo way does result in a texture that is unlike conventionally cooked shrimp. It is a bit softer and perhaps a bit more "slippery". I would have enjoyed a bit of a crunch served with these shrimp just to keep my palate awake.

The cod, was absolutely perfect. Poached to a creamy perfection, the inherently light flavored fish was buttery and delicious. The spinach fondue, which I feared would be heavy and cheesy was a simple, elegant puree of spinach, served as the base of the dish which allowed every bite to be dragged through it. The spinach had been pureed with thyme which gave it a beautiful, natural flavor. The potatoes, perfectly cooked cubes of starch, gave a beautiful toothsome texture to the dish, a wonderful contrast to the fork tender cod. Similarly, the artichokes provided the same texture contrast, but with a more tart flavor, they added a beautiful addition. I cleaned my plate with this one.

We finished off our meal with a shared piece of their Rosemary, White Chocolate Bread Pudding served on top of caramel sauce and with a lovely scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. I am not a huge fan of white chocolate- I often find it too sweet for my taste. However in this application, paired with the ever savory and wonderfully earthy rosemary herb, it was perfection. The bread pudding was firmer than I normally enjoy, but it's sturdy-ness I felt actually battled down some of the over sweetness as well, and that rosemary. Like a welcoming hug coming in out of the cold, the rosemary greeted each bite with vigor, and then faded to allow the white chocolate and yeasty-ness of the bread to shine forth.

I must note the wonderful assistance of the servers. We had a difficult time deciding what entrees to order, and Island Creek's willingness to split each entree into our own portions made it easy to share, and to taste a fair amount of the menu without juggling plates and having awkward table space. While I'm sure that the request made it a bit tougher both on the servers and the kitchen, they suggested it without any hesitation and made it appear effortless.

With fresh seafood, inventive preparations, and welcoming and attentive staff, I know I will soon return to Island Creek Oyster Bar
